Dexter Retro Review: A Twisted Blend of Dark Deeds & Heroic Purpose!

“My dark passenger is like a trapped coal miner, always tapping, always letting me know it’s still in there, and tonight is the night.” This isn’t just a chilling line of dialogue; it is the essence of the whole Dexter series that keeps you totally invested till the end.

First released in 2006, this suspense-thriller crime drama follows Dexter Morgan – a seemingly mild-mannered blood spatter analyst for the Miami police by day and a cold-blooded serial killer by night.

The show ran for eight seasons until 2013 and was revived in 2021 due to overwhelming fan demand for a more satisfying conclusion.

So, what is so special about Dexter? Let’s discuss that in this short retro review!

It would be justice to say that Dexter is a character-driven series that revolves entirely around the dark, complex journey of Dexter Morgan. For the outside world, he is a mild-mannered man working as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Police Department. But no one knows what’s inside – he is a cold-blooded serial killer by night with a scary mindset.

Dexter has an uncontrollable urge to kill people, which he refers to as The Dark Passenger. He is the adopted son of a late police officer, Harry Morgan, who trained him to use his urge to kill to serve justice. His father gave him a code to kill only those who “deserve” it — criminals who have slipped through the cracks of the justice system.

Dexter Review: Cast & Characters

Dexter Review: Cast & Characters

The brilliance of Dexter isn’t just in its story – it’s in the characters who bring that story to life. Led by Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, it has a long list of memorable characters of significant importance.

Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan: Debra is Dexter’s foul-mouthed, emotional sister. She works as a detective in the same police department and has no idea about Dexter’s dark side. Her character brings depth to the show, and her bond with Dexter becomes one of the most emotional parts of the series.

James Remar as Harry Morgan: Harry is Dexter’s adoptive father and a former police officer. He knew early on that Dexter had a dark side, so he taught him a strict “code” — to only kill killers. Even after Harry’s death, his presence is felt through Dexter’s memories and inner voice.

Julie Benz as Rita Bennett: Rita is Dexter’s girlfriend, and later, his wife. She is beautiful, soft-spoken, gentle, and recovering from an abusive past. For Dexter, she is the part of his life where he feels normal. Rita doesn’t know about Dexter’s secret, but her love and trust in him add emotional depth and tragic tension to the story.

Besides all of them, the Dexter series has a lot more interesting characters like David Zayas as Angel Batista, C.S. Lee as Vince Masuka, and Lauren Vélez as Maria LaGuerta.
